Is 'Classical Indian Music' on the deathbed?I think it can be a burning issue of debate but nobody bothers to highlight. Nor the Central or the State Governments are concerned regarding the real talents of classical music who go on practicing for hours and devote their life for achieving perfection in the real music of India.

The Indian classical music, which reflects the essence of the Indian culture, tradition and heritage, is pathetically got lost in the darkness and if the Governments do something then it is only the awards apart from which they are not at all interested in nurturing these young talents.

If this is the fate of the Government, We the citizens of India do not differ much from this attitude towards Indian music.

Everyday we do listen to music and enjoy seeing the reality music shows on our television sets. These TV shows only concentrate on the artists and young talents who are no better than mere copycats of film music, and it seems that there is nothing left in this world except movie songs.

So if this is our attitude towards this art of India, then how will we be able to give the world some great singers like MIYAN TANSEN, PANDIT BHIMSEN JOSHI, M.S. SUBALAKSHMI, etc in the future.

I am happy that atleast some one (Ganesh Chavan) is worried that Indian Classical Music is on the verge of extinction.

It is really matter of deep concern that the Indian classical music, which reflects the essence of the Indian culture, tradition and heritage, is pathetically got lost in the darkness.

There it is high time Governments should do something to revive the lost glory that a singer used to derive out of his hard work.

It is indeed sad that we are so much immersed in Bollywood music that Indian Classical music is battling for survival! Thought provoking article...well written.

Like everything associated with ancient India: our heritage, culture, history, ethics, family values, festivals et al, classical music is also on the decline. It is sad, but in a changing world unless we market our stuff properly it will remain unsold and rotting in the warehouse.
I believe every Indian should first love our country and its baggage... then learn and gain indepth knowledge about one or more aspects of our great civilisation.. and then think about ways and means to make it cool... so that modern day youth get attracted to it.
Otherwise we can just watch our culture dieing infront of us as we cry impotently....

In agreement with srinidhi Indian classical music should be marketed well to survive. For that matter, the classical instrumental music is doing better. Take pandit shiv kumar sharma and his santoor or as exemplified by the picture pandit ravishankar and his sitar recitals. For the vocal part to survive , more attractive ragas, voices and style of rendition should be put forward to the audience. Mere musical grammer is going to make them sleep.

I really am not an Indian Classical Music fan. I dunno but I just can;t seem to like it. And I do not like the way ’bollywood’ is going these days. Hindi songs do not sound like Hindi songs. I hope you know what I mean.. Don’t wanna be crude.. I miss the days during 90s when we had those beautiful songs.. I still love songs from Aashiqui.. Can’t even bear to listen to today’s ’Bollywood’ music. So I stick to a couple of alternative bands

I disagree that classical music is on death bed...western classical never died when rock, pop and other genre of music evolved. There are enough fans of classical music in our country though it is not visible. Classical can never enjoy popularity like bollywood. Its like do we give up making or enjoying good tea or coffee just because there are thousands of road-side chai-coffee-shops. It is just a matter of personal taste...

Once a great poet said ”heard music are sweet but those unheard are more sweeter ” .Why not some thing original is coming out of the music ?
yes i do believe in this truth that classical music is rapidly becoming a thing of past. And if the present reality shows in the name of music continues on the T.V. very soon we are going to forget about the original singers . Only and only we will get the cheap immitation of some renowned singers. No more Myan Tansen or Bhimsen Joshi lata mangeshkar, mohhamed rafi and Kishore Kumar. Please don’t think i am against of these all time great artists but what pinches more that why not some original thing is coming out from the stores of music . Every time and in every shows there is a repetition
and only repetition . what ever it is a show, a perfomance ,a gimmik of iinhancing the TRP of channel but for sure it is not music.
